I feel as if I have spent a LARGE portion of my life doing laundry!  6 kids plus my husband and I can generate an ENORMOUS amount of laundry and a large amount of money spent on laundry detergent!  So…to help with the expense I make my own laundry detergent.  It has stood the test of time and saves us a lot of money! It also works well!

The best part is it only costs 2 cents a load!!

Here it is…

Money-Saving Homemade Laundry Detergent

Supplies

3 cups Borax

3 cups washing soda

3 cups baking soda

2 bars of grated soap (I have used  all kinds of soap without any noticeable difference)

30 drops of essential oil

DIRECTIONS

1. Grate by hand the two bars of soap.

2. Place all ingredients in a large bowl or container and mix well.

3.  Place in an airtight container and store until you are ready to use it.  I use a covered glass container to store the homemade laundry detergent.

* Use 2 Tablespoons of laundry detergent per load.

  1. I use this same detergent, but always use Fels Naptha because of its scent — I don’t use any essential oils with it (I put essential oil on my dryer balls, however). I do find that the soap eventually builds up and makes clothes dingy so once in a while I splurge on Tide and everything gets a Tide wash for a week. Also using white vinegar in the softener dispenser helps remove any lingering smell (especially from boy clothes — and girl dance clothes!).

    1. Hi Barbara,
I do the exact same thing! Every 3 months my clothes get a wash with Tide:) I love the dryer ball idea!

  2. Thanks for the great recipe!

    1. You are welcome, I hope you will like it as much as I do!
