How does the Bible define a successful day?  Obedience

I am not talking about the direct Hebrew and Greek translation of the word success.  Rather, a study of the people of the Bible who are successful in terms of how they navigated life.  The people of the Bible were often duds behaving in ways that were contrary to God’s Word, much like us.  In my younger years as a Christian, I continually wondered what was the matter with the Israelites.  Why couldn’t they just behave?  That was until I realized that I was an Israelite too!

The Bible also clearly displays how a repentant person can have a successful day by walking in obedience to God’s word. I am not trying to over-simplify the act of obedience.  It requires hard work and determination and the constant washing of one’s mind with the Holy Spirit and God’s Word.

3 Questions For A Successful Day

Are the things I am engaging in obedient to God’s Word?

God’s Word is perfect and it is, among other things a blueprint for life.  Showing us what to do and not do.  Yet, God’s Word is ultimately a story of redemption over and over again. we see broken people (us)  making mistakes and repenting.  The repenting part is the key to a successful day!  Are you doing what is right in your own eyes instead of walking in obedience to God’s Word?  Then repent and encounter the forgiveness and freedom that only Jesus can provide.

Have I helped my husband today?

How can I help my husband?  Although, I am tempted…a lot…to view my husband as my helper. 🙂  It is the opposite.  I am to help him accomplish what God has called him to do.  That often requires putting oneself second and therein lies the problem.  I personally prefer being first.  I have found over the last 27 years of marriage, that asking my husband at least once a day what he needs help doing has been a blessing, not a curse.  There is happiness that comes from helping the people you love.  It is also a breath of fresh air to get over myself on a daily basis.

Am I meeting the needs of my children?

Notice, I did not say the word “wants” here.  I know, the laundry is piled to the ceiling and there are dishes in the sink but make sure to look your child in the eye when they are talking to you.  Take a break from the dishes and sit with your child for five minutes.  Listen to their hearts.  It is only when we have our children’s hearts that we can be successful in parenting.  This way is the gentle way, it is the same method our Heavenly Father uses on us.  If your child is behaving badly, stop what you are doing, listen, and get to the bottom of it.
