Successful Seed Starting is EASY if you follow these 7 tips!

Somehow along the way, people began to think that starting seeds indoors was hard and best left to the professionals.  The good news is that seed starting is simple and if you follow the instructions it will be even more effortless.  Starting seeds inside on a windowsill will save you tons of money.  This is a wonderful frugal skill to possess!

“However many years she lived,

Mary always felt that ‘she should never forget

that first morning when her

garden began to grow’.”

― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Another added benefit to starting your own seedlings is that children can participate in the process too.  I don’t think I ever met a child who did not enjoy the act of growing things.  I have also found that kids really like to play in the dirt.  Adult supervision is needed at first but then depending on the child’s age, seed starting can be done independently once learned.  Consider letting your children have their own garden plot or container garden.

7 Tips For Successful Seed Starting

  1. Know what garden zone you are in and what your last frost date is.
  2. Don’t plant your seeds in potting soil, use a soilless mix. Sprinkle a thin layer of organic compost on top of the seeds.
  3. Seeds should be sown at a depth equal to their thickness.
  4. Make sure your seed starting container is sterilized.
  5. Cover your seed starting containers with saran wrap or a plastic or glass lid to maintain a consistent moisture level.
  6. Use a 3 step system.  First plant seeds inside, then move them outside on warmer days to harden them off (make sure to bring them back in at night) and finally plant seedlings into your garden plot after all danger of frost.
  7. Water weekly with water and diluted fish emulsion for fertilizer.

Whether you love to plant flowers or vegetables these tips will help you have a successful garden and reap all the benefits that a growing season can bring.   Want to learn more about GARDENING…wishing you and your family many fun-filled hours playing in the dirt!

  1. I can’t decide if I want to try growing vegetables this year. I’ve tried so often and failed. If the bunnies don’t eat it, the plants grow and grow but not much produce. I have too much shade.
