Family traditions are a big deal to me.  They are a great comfort in an ever-changing world, a beautiful chance to slow things down just a little.   Traditions bring stability and meaning to holidays.  We may make fun of them from time to time but we are grateful for them in the long run.  Thanksgiving is a specifically American holiday but it is also a holiday where we can easily make Christ the center of it.  Thankfulness is at the very core of Christianity.

This Thanksgiving,

begin a new family tradition

with 5 kernels of corn.

My Mom started the Thanksgiving tradition of 5 kernels of corn many years ago when a student gave her a bag of candy corns with the following text attached.  From that time on, we have had 5 candy corns on our dinner plate each Thanksgiving.  As my Mom reads the story of the 5 kernels we eat each one of our candy corns and then proceed to family prayer.

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

– Colossians 3:16-17

You can use the 5 kernels card in two different ways.  Firstly, you can read the story as my family does, and start a family tradition to be read every holiday.  The second way is as a Thanksgiving gift or favor for neighbors, friends, and Thanksgiving dinner attendees.

Print on cardstock for the best effect.
