There are two ways to start seeds.  You can either start them inside or you can direct seed them into the soil.  I like to do both! I am excited to share with you my favorite 20 vegetables to direct seed!

Either of these methods will depend on where you live.   You must know what garden zone you are in.  To ensure success you must also determine what time is best to direct seed.  It will vary depending on the type of plant.  For example, Peas and Spinach do well direct-seeded right after your last frost date.  They like the weather to be cooler.  However, squash and corn are planted later because they like to soil to be a bit warmer.

Learning how to direct seed into your garden bed is FUN and EASY!  It is also a wonderful family activity, just be prepared for clumps of vegetables or use this handheld seed dispenser. Just make sure to read your seed packet before planting.  It will give you specific guidelines that will ensure you are successful.

To avoid tons of vegetables coming into season at the same time.  Stagger your planting.  For example, I like to stagger planting my lettuce rows so I don’t have more lettuce than I can eat coming in all at the same time.  To prevent this from happening I plant one row a week.

  1. We direct seed almost everything we grow. Can’t wait to plant the garden, but we can’t until mid May for somethings and even late May for others. Thanks for sharing on Let’s Get Real Link Party.
