I have so many fond memories of hysterical laughter with my family while playing board games or even a round of cards!  My favorite card game was Kings in the Corner which I learned from my grandpa.  The tradition of Family Game Night has continued with my children.  It is good old fashioned fun!  A few other reasons I like board games is that depending on the game, it improves cognitive reasoning as well as spatial awareness, plus it’s screen-free.  For me, the most important reason is the making of family memories, it’s so good to laugh and play together!

As a mother of six, I feel I have perfected (well almost, nothing is perfect this side of heaven) the art of family game night.  Here is what I have learned from hundreds of game nights played with my family…

3 Elements Of A Perfect Family Game Night

FOOD

I am not sure which is more important in my home, the food or the game?  Making a delicious snack or dessert seems to set the tone for family night.  It exemplifies this is a special night to treasure, with the best people in the world, one’s own family.  I also find that having food available is good for the little ones who might not be as competitive in their game-playing skills.  The food you provide can often keep them occupied when the board game might become tedious for them.  Why not try homemade popcorn or cupcakes, you can get let the kids help you make those delicacies too.

FUN GAME

I asked my tribe of six children, what their favorite games for family game night are and received a plethora of answers!   Here are the top five that they mentioned.

  1. Clue
  2. Into The Forest
  3. Sorry
  4. Bible Memory
  5. Catch Phrase

COMFORT

I know we don’t often think about the atmosphere of the home when we think about preparing for family game night, but it is important.  Does everyone have a chair or a pillow if sitting on the ground?  Are the little ones paired with a parent or a sibling?  Have you thoroughly explained the rules and even the rules of family conduct when winning or losing?  Are there multiple bowls of food?  Can everyone reach the board game?  You can even ask if any of your children have a joke or a riddle they would like to share.
