I get asked a lot of questions as a mother of six!  One of the most common is, “how do you get out the door with kids”?  This question is up there in frequency with, “are you crazy”?  Getting out the door seems to be a major problem for all mothers no matter how many children you have.  Now, that mine are almost all grown, I have the gift of hindsight.  Looking at what I did that was effective and what I did that was a flop is the basis of this article.  I have narrowed it down to 3 EASY steps that worked for me and it is my sincerest hope that they will work for you too!

3 EASY Steps to Get Out The Door With Kids

PLAN

The night before take a moment and pray, let your children know what is happening the next day.  Set out appropriate clothes and accessories for the next day’s activity.  This is a great time to teach your kids about learning how to dress for different weather, activities, and occasions.  Have one child check the weather forecast for the next day.  Older children can pick their own clothes and lay them out.  Pack food and diaper bag the night before too!

PRACTICE

I know this sounds silly but if everyone knows their place in the car.  Everyone knows who needs to help who and who is in charge of putting the baby into the car then it makes things run smoothly.  I have even made a game of it…timing how fast we could get in the car when we were practicing, the kids loved that!  You may even want to practice leaving the activity.  Let the kids know how you expect them to behave when it is time to leave.  Give a ten-minute warning or whatever works for your family.

RELAX

I know it sounds crazy but if you are relaxed your kids will be too.  This will affect their behavior and how everyone enjoys the day.  This has been a hard-learned lesson for me personally but trust me. it is of critical importance for your physical am mental health as well as for your children.

One final tip, count before you pull out of the driveway so you don’t leave anyone behind!

I am not a naturally organized person but I can not stand to be stressed out!  These tips have kept me calm and helped me enjoy the ever-fleeting time with my children.  I know it does not seem like time goes by quickly especially in the younger years so why not do all you can to enjoy yourself and your kids!
