Organize Your Clothes And Closet, organizing clothes can bring a cold sweat to any brow but it doesn’t have to be that way.  Breaking tasks into smaller pieces will simplify the process.  The promise that this will save you money and could even make you some money might just encourage you to take the plunge.

Before we start sorting and bagging clothes, ask yourself a few questions.

Do I love it?

What colors look good on me?

What kinds of clothes do I need (work, home, church, volunteer, exercise, sleep?)

Do I wear them often?

Organize Your Clothes And Closet

SUPPLIES

paper boxes or plastic storage bins.

garbage bags

paper and pencil

Let’s start with our closet and then you can move on to organize your drawers using the same processes.

  • First, take every single piece of clothing out of your closet and lay them on your bed.
  • Next, organize your clothing in like groups.  One pile of shirts, one for pants, one for skirts, one for jackets and sweaters, one pile for dresses.
  • Start by taking all the clothes with sentimental value that you no longer wear and put it into a paper box or plastic bin to be stored in the attic or basement.  I have kept things like the dress my husband purchased for me our first Christmas as a married couple, the first dress I ever made.)  These clothes while important, don’t need to be stored in your closet.
  • Next, pull out all the clothes that no longer fit you from the piles on your bed.  Place these clothes into a plastic bag to give away and bless another person.
  • Pull out all the clothes that need to be repaired.  Put these clothes near your sewing basket or give them away too.

Now comes the fun part!

Take a look at how you answered the three questions.  For example, If I were answering those questions.  I would say that I look good in greens and blues (I am a redhead).  I am a homemaker who works from home and homeschools, loves to garden, and goes to church on a weekly basis.  So I need clothes for these areas of my life.  Some of my favorite pieces of clothing are a green sweater, a green plaid skirt, a navy blue sundress, and a turquoise shirt.

Check on Pinterest to determine your clothing style or for outfits, you would like to duplicate in your own wardrobe.  Having a clear vision for your own personal style will help you determine what clothes to keep and what to give-a-way.

If you really want help finding out what looks good on you, ask your daughters or husband.  Every Fall and Spring my daughters and I have a fashion show (in the privacy of our home) to help determine which clothes to keep and what to get rid of.  We have so much fun laughing and  I am always shocked that I have been wearing a few things that just don’t work anymore!

FRUGAL TIP

The object of this exercise is not to pitch all your clothes! Here are some ideas to save money on your clothes. Think about altering clothes to update the style, add or subtract embellishments or  Start a  “Clothing To Get List” and look at the thrift store or at sales to find the clothes you need.

  • Now, put all the clothes that you don’t like, or are not in becoming colors on you, in a give-a-way bag.
  • Put the remainder of clothes left on your bed, back in your closet.  You can hang your clothing in the closet in various ways.  You can organize them according to outfits, or according to color.  I organize my clothes according to pieces.  All my pants together, shirts together, skirts together and finally dresses together.

Next step, repeat the process with the clothes in your drawers.

YOUR TURN…

How do you organize your closet, the frugal way?
