I love this quote from C. S. Lewis, “It is a good rule after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between”.  I completely agree!  Books become old friends and are definitely rereading!  This month’s Simple Short Christian Book Reviews are full of new books hot off the press as well as some old friends.

BIBLICAL WOMANHOOD

The Gospel Comes With A House Key: Practicing Radically Ordinary Hospitality in Our Post-Christitan World by Rosaria Butterfield is a life-changing read.  There are not many books that can claim that quality.  I read The Gospel Comes With A House Key at the perfect God-ordained moment.  Within the last 6 months, we have opened our home to the young man we sponsored for years at an orphanage and then added a young woman in a crisis situation. I highly recommend this book!

CHILDREN

Talking to our children about ideas and realities that contradict what scripture teaches is of vital importance.  It can not be overlooked.  Here are two amazing books that will start your discussions off.  What a relief!  Please read God Made Boys and Girls: Helping Children Understand the Gift of Gender and God Made Me For Heaven today!

COOKBOOK

Oh, you are going to absolutely love The Prairie Kitchen Cookbook: 75 Wholesome Heartland Recipes for Every Season by Kayla Lobermeier!  This book is full of delicious and nutritious recipes!  I have spent the past few months cooking my way through this tremendous book!  Make sure to follow Kayla on Instagram @UnderATinRoof

GARDEN

Peony: The Best Varieties for Your Garden is a visually stunning book!  The photographs are amazing and the content is valuable.   I used this book to identify various vintage varieties of peonies I had growing on my property.  This stunner would be a beautiful coffee table book too!

HANDICRAFTS

Embroidered Country Gardens: Create beautiful hand-stitched floral designs inspired by nature, a book full of beautiful, charming projects to make as gifts or to decorate your home.  I have bookmarked many pages and I am saving my embroidery projects for the winter when I am dreaming of my garden and am not able to be outside.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund is a revelation.  Please read this book. The insights on every single page are incredible and rejuvenate and nurture the soul!  I often will pick up my copy again and again right before I go to bed.  A balm of healing when times are difficult!

HOMEMAKING

Sally Clarkson has never written a book I didn’t love.  Nope never!  Her newest book is no exception. Teatime Discipleship: Sharing Faith One Cup at a Time is like sitting down and talking to Sally with a cup of tea in hand.  I learned more about her personal story in this book than ever before and particularly enjoyed learning about her time in communist Poland as a missionary.

FINANCES

I first heard about You Will Own Nothing by Carol Roth in a podcast I was listening to.  She said when she first heard this quote, “You will own nothing and you will be happy”, she thought it was a joke, then a conspiracy theory.  Regrettably, it turned out to be a true statement from the World Economic Forum.  Important read and an added bonus is she makes it easy to understand!

HISTORICAL FICTION

The Keeper of Hidden Books takes place during World War II, set in Poland, the main characters are two best friends who work at the Warsaw Library.  Based on actual events with fictional characters.  I could not put this one down!  Depictions of War are mature but the storyline is clean.  Enjoy!

ELEMENTARY FICTION

I knew I was going to love The Adventures of Miss Petitfour by Anne Michaels because of a few things.  First, it has a satin ribbon bookmark, secondly, there is a redhead as the main character, third, she has sixteen cats and fourth she has adventures using a flying tablecloth.  Need I say more?  Wholesome, fun, adventurous, happy!
