What Does The Bible Say About Homemaking? The Bible does not use the word homemaker per se; it does, however, use the term keeper at home.  That said, God’s Word does talk about the principles involved in managing a home.

Titus 2:5 is where we get the term keeper at home; some translations say worker at home. This should clear things up…the Greek term used here is oikourgos, which means “house-worker” or “one who works at home,” and is derived from oikos (house) and ergon (work). I just love that word, don’t you?  The idea is that women of the Word are to actively manage and care for their homes.

There is a lie out there that says that homemaking is drudgery.  The opposite is true.  There is so much scope for the imagination (nod to Anne of Green Gables here) when engaging with the creative stewardship of one’s home!  Homemaking is not all about cleaning or cooking; it is so much more!  Homemakers can ensure their homes are a place of love, stability, and a sacred place to grow a family’s faith through prayer.  Homemaking is a way that women can honor God and is a truly beautiful profession!

When we look at a few more verses in the book of Titus, we see that being a homemaker is indeed a role of influence. Titus 3:5 illuminates character traits like pure, kind, and loving.  Titus also comes with a warning.  Being a keeper at home is so important that not to do so is to risk the Word of God being maligned! The famous Proverbs 31 woman is a lovely example of a woman who prioritizes her husband, children, and homemaking. She is faithful and can laugh at the days to come because of her diligence.

What Does The Bible Say About Homemaking?

Proverbs 31:10-31

It seems like Proverbs 31 is the go-to text for homemaking, often called the “Virtuous Woman” passage. It describes a woman who is diligent in her tasks and puts forth energy to make sure her home is a place of industry and care. She manages her household, provides food, handles finances wisely, and smartly. She works with her hands and enjoys trading. Lastly, she shows strength and kindness. Her homemaking isn’t just about domestic chores. Rather, it’s about creating a stable, thriving environment where her family and community are blessed.

Titus 2:3-5

It is an instruction to older women to teach younger women to be “keepers at home,” which also includes being loving, pure, and kind. Homemaking cultivates a godly family life and is also a role of responsibility.

1 Timothy 5:14

Encourages younger widows to marry, bear children, and “manage their households.” This is an example of how much homemaking revolves around nurturing children.

Psalm 127:3-5 and Proverbs 22:6

One of the main purposes of homemaking is the care and love of children.  The mission of motherhood is to raise dedicated disciples of Christ.  Raising children is a sacred responsibility.

In conclusion, in order to make a home, God intelligently includes husbands in the process.  Both women and men are to be diligent. They each have a different role to play, though. As we see, in Ephesians 5:25-28 and 1 Timothy 5:8, men are called to lovingly lead and provide for their wives and family. The home is a refuge in a dark world that is a beacon of light.  It is to lovingly provide for its residents the family, show hospitality to those in need, offer godly discipleship, and point all people to salvation in Jesus Christ.
