What do you think of when you contemplate Family Fun On The Fourth Of July?

I think of patriotism, the birthday of the United States of America, picnics, the Constitution, parades, and family fun! Holidays are a great opportunity to make meaningful family memories, educate the family on the “how” and “why” of the special day, and have a ton of fun while you’re at it!

I am excited to share with you some of the fun family activities our family has participated in over the years.  I hope you will have as much fun as we did!

Family Fun On The Fourth Of July

  • Have a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence.  FREE PRINTABLE
  • Cool off with a family water gun fight or run through the sprinkler with your kids.
  • Set up and ring your own “Liberty Bell” and have each person declare the liberties they are thankful for.
  • Put together a red, white, and blue sidewalk chalk center and step back and enjoy the kids’ patriotic creations.
  • Pray for our nation’s leaders.
  • Break out the sparklers (under adult supervision of course!)
  • Give each person a copy of the Declaration of Independence and have them circle all the times God is mentioned.
  • Have a Fourth of July Scavenger Hunt.  Hide pennies, nickels, and dimes throughout the yard and have the kids find them.  After the hunt is done ask them to look at the writing on the coins.  Talk about why we have words like “In God We Trust” and “Liberty” on our coins.
  • Enjoy a watermelon seed spitting contest.
  • Watch Liberty Kids the week after or before the Fourth of July.
  • Play 20 Questions…assign people, patriotic leaders, to research before the Fourth of July. At your celebration, people can take turns asking questions and guessing who each leader is.
  • Decorate bikes and ride in your local parade.
  • Say the pledge of allegiance together.
  • Learn about flag etiquette.
  • Have a sing-a-long and sing patriotic songs like “America the Beautiful”, “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory”, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, and “God Bless America”.
  • Read The Fourth of July Story by Alice Dalgliesh to the whole family.
  • Stay up late to watch the fireworks!
  • Discuss what the colors of our flag mean.  Red= hardiness, courage, and shed blood.   White= purity and innocence.  Blue= vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
  • Play a game of baseball and have fun laughing!
  • Research Betsy Ross and learn how to sew your own American Flag.
  • Attend a Patriotic Impersonation Event… we have seen a wonderful impersonation of Abraham Lincoln!  Check out your local Historical Society for more information.
  • For older members of the family, watch the HBO series, John Adams.  (We close our eyes at two parts so be forewarned, however, it is an excellent and historically accurate movie.)
  • Have a water balloon fight!
  • Make a Fourth of July care package for missionaries who live in other countries.
  • Put together a puzzle map of the United States.
  • Have a pie-eating contest…outside.
  • Do you live near any Revolutionary War battle sights?  Take a field trip to one.

YOUR TURN…

How do you and your family celebrate July 4th?

Have FUN and Happy Fourth of July!
