I’ve been pondering yet again, and this time I have been searching the Scriptures for why identity matters.  You can hardly go a day without hearing the word “identity”.   For the record, I believe one’s identity is a very important topic to be discussing.  The subject must be critically addressed, and from a Christian Worldview, using the Bible as our guide.  The moment we count our own opinions and preferences on the same level as God’s Word we are in sinking sand.

How do you identify yourself? And, what is the most important part of your identity?

There are innumerable ways you can identify yourself and some are even divisive.  Here is the thing though, if you are a follower of Christ, you have been redeemed, forgiven, and born again. You have only one identity, you may belong to many groups but your identity is in and with Christ.

Here’s why identity matters…

  • Believing, knowing, and understanding one’s identity affects every aspect of life.
  • Our identity in Christ is a basic foundation that must be laid to establish well-being and self-worth.
  • If we do not know who we are, we cannot understand the many purposes God created us for.

Remember friend, God’s promises display unshakeable certainty that we are forever hidden in Christ.  That said, please be aware that Satan is whispering deceptive, destructive lies about who we are and seeks to destroy us. Let’s renew our minds with the following Bible verses about our Identity in Christ.

You are…

WONDERFULLY MADE

Psalm 139:13-16
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

CHOSEN

1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

ADOPTED

Ephesians 1:4-5

A MASTERPIECE

Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

FORGIVEN

Colossians 2:13-14
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.

WASHED CLEAN

Isaiah 1:18

Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

FREE

Galatians 5:1
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

FRIEND

John 15:15
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

JUSTIFIED

Romans 5:1-2
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

DELIGHTED IN

Zephaniah 3:17

NEVER ALONE

ANOINTED

Since we have such a hope, we are very bold.

A TEMPLE

1 Corinthians 3:16

NEW CREATION

2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

CHILD OF GOD

1 John 3:1
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

BELOVED

Jeremiah 31:3

The Lord appeared to him[a] from far away.  I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

WHOLE

Colossians 2:10

In Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

I am in awe of my identity in Christ, may you be transformed by the truth of God’s Word!
