Simple Short Christian Book Reviews

HISTORICAL FICTION

In Places Hidden, the most recent book by Tracie Person does not disappoint! If you are a historical fiction fan you will definitely enjoy In Hidden Places which explores the history of San Francisco.  I learned so many interesting facts through the reading of this book that I had previously not known about California and the time period.  I have to admit, I almost passed on this book because of the cover!  I can’t imagine what they were thinking?  If you can get past that, I can guarantee you will enjoy getting to know Camriann and her sidekicks Judith and Kenzie as they set out to solve the mystery of Camriann’s missing brother!

Does Beverly Lewis even need a book reviewed anymore?  She has written so many excellent page-turners over the years that I am not sure I can do her work justice.  I am pleased to say that The Road Home is yet another creatively written, can’t put it down, Beverly Lewis book! In my humble opinion she may have outdone herself with this one and as for me is now my favorite.   You will be drenched in compassion as you meed the main character Lena Rose Schwartz as she grieves the loss of her parents and the separation from her nine siblings.  She has been sent to Pennsylvania to live in a new Amish community and well, you better get the book to find out the rest…

COOKBOOK

The long-awaited Magnolia Table: A Collection of Recipes for Gathering written by Joanna Gains does not disappoint!  This book is chocked full of deliciousness and well, the photographs are true to the Filler Upper Style standard…EXCELLENT!  The recipes are easy to understand and most are at a beginner cooking level.  ENJOY!

GARDENING

Foraged Flora: A Year of Gathering and Arranging Wild Plants and Flowers took my breath away with the stunning photographs in this linen-covered coffee table book! The feel of the book in your hands is enjoyable, then add the inspirational photographs, and the fact that all the flower arrangements in this book are made from foraged flowers and plants makes this book a triple threat!   Did I mention the text is fabulous too?  A must-have for any thrifty gardener!

HOME DECOR

I am currently obsessed with Remodelista!  Although, not every interior photographed is my personal home decor style, every home is full of excellent design principles that will work for every home.  Remodelista is just what it says it is…A Manual for the Considered Home!  Creative solutions to even the most difficult homemaking dilemmas and the photographs in this book are worth the price of the book alone!  This is a book that you will pull off the bookshelf or coffee table again and again for continued enjoyment and inspiration!

FAMILY

Amish Values For Your Family is the second book on the list this month about the Amish.  As an Ohioan who sees the Amish in my own community from time to time, I greatly enjoyed this book.  Clear and to the point, Suzanne Woods Fisher answers many questions about the Amish family and why they have such overwhelming success in passing on their faith to their children.  In the modern-day Christian Church, we are only passing on our faith with a 20 -40 percent success rate depending on the stats you use.  If you are a Christian parent who is concerned about making sure your children are growing in their faith you may want to purchase this superior book and learn how and why the Amish have been so successful in family life!

CRAFTS

I am currently working on a quilt for my daughter’s room.  I am incorporating several ideas that I found in Wise Craft Quilts.  My fabric choices were also inspired by this helpful and easy to use book!  Old-time quilting principles fill the pages of Wise Craft Quits and encouraged me to pick cherished fabrics that hold memories for my daughter. Twenty-one quilts with clear directions are included!  Beautifully photographed using vintage fabric and loaded with creativity.

SPIRITUAL

Wounded: How to Find Wholeness and Inner Healing in Christ

Draw Close To The Fire: Finding God in the Darkness

These two books written by Terry Wardle have so profoundly affected me in my Spiritual walk with Jesus Christ that I am struggling to even put anything coherent into words.  If you are struggling with past wounds, trauma, or heartache that has never healed please read these two books.  You will learn how to draw close to God in the most beautiful ways and be transformed by the love of your Father in heaven.

FINANCES

Thrifty: Living The Frugal Life With Style taught me a few things and made me laugh all at the same time.  I have spent the past 30 years honing my skills as a frugal homemaker.  Wish I had found this book a few years earlier!   If you are of the same mindset as me and thrive on saving a buck or two or three, then you will want to pick up this enjoyable read!

CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW

I had the great privilege to hear John M. Perkins speak last year at the Legacy Conference in Chicago and to say he made an impression on me would be an understatement!  He is a GREAT man and that’s all I have to say about that.  So when I heard that his book One Blood: Parting Words To The Church On Race was coming out I couldn’t get my hands on it quick enough.  This is one of those books that every Christian should read.  Steeped in the wisdom of the Bible and a life well-lived, you really do not want to miss it.  Appropriate for ages 13 – 100.  One Blood will make a wonderful addition to a homeschool curriculum or for family devotions.  This is a crucially important book written by the only man who is so eloquently able to write it.

CHILDREN

Unveiling the Kings of Israel will allow your children to see that archaeological discoveries continue to prove the Bible is an amazing historical record. The historical records of Egypt and Israel show a remarkable consistency with the Bible records, which we can accept as not only inspiring but also entirely reliable. You will want to pick up this AMAZING book for your late elementary age children on up through high school!  You are going to love it too!
