A Simple Short Christian Book Review is one of the hardest things to write because it is based solely on a person’s opinion.  Everyone has different opinions on what a good book is and isn’t, and rightly so.  Christian Book Reviews are slightly easier to write because you are not just giving your personal opinion but also examining whether or not the book is written from a Christian Worldview.  Not all the books you see featured in The Peaceful Haven’s monthly book reviews are published by Christian publishers or even written by Christians.  But they will always approach a book review from a Biblical Worldview.  If there is something objectionable in a book it will be noted.

I had so much fun reading this month and I must confess to coming across some truly excellent written works and well, some real duds too!  Here are my picks for the month and I pray you will be inspired to grow in your home, family, and faith!

Simple Short Christian Book Reviews

FICTION

We all have our favorites, don’t we?  For the record, I have been learning from and enjoying the exceptionally written literature that Bodie and Brock Thoene have been turning out for more than 20 years.  They are absolutely on my Top 10 list of all-time favorite authors.  You just don’t get much better than this!  The Thoene husband and wife team has done it again with their new series about the life of Christ.  The release of the third book in the series is another triumph with its moving storyline and incredibly well-researched background information that is sprinkled throughout the storyline.  I learned so much about the Bible and these books have challenged me to look at some Biblical events through new eyes.   The Jerusalem Chronicles is a must-read series!

HOMESCHOOL

The first Bible Study I ever taught was by Sally Clarkson.  I don’t even want to mention how long ago that was!  When I read and reread Clarkson’s words one word comes to mind…WISDOM!  All their kids are grown now but the truth of their advice still rings true.  You won’t regret spending time reading Educating the Wholehearted Child.  You and your children will be better for it!

MOTHERHOOD

Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood is like a breath of fresh air!  This book will help you integrate your complete self into the mission of motherhood and your children will benefit from the principles in this encouraging book.  Don’t be put off by the title, this book isn’t just for creatives it is for every woman that is a mother. Enjoy!

INTERIOR DESIGN

I had so much fun reading about this young family’s journey to decorate and DIY their home.  Chocked full of TONS of ideas for your home.  Their style is not my style but I found I could adapt most of the projects to my “farmhouse style”  easily enough!  All I have to say is have FUN!  Make sure to check out Young House Love!

GARDENING

This is a picture book and it is full of inspiration and creative ideas.  Seeing some of the very best garden designs in America will spur you on to make a few changes in your own garden.  Pour yourself a cup of tea and take an hour to read this lovely book.  Outstanding American Gardens has become a classic of sorts and I highly recommend this book to any gardening aficionado!

COOKBOOK

I have been waiting for this book and I didn’t even know it.  With a daughter allergic to cane sugar, you can only imagine how happy I was to get my hands on Naturally Sweet Food in Jars.  As I opened the pages I found myself holding my breath!  I so wanted this to be a helpful book and I am thrilled to let you know it is all I hoped it would be, the recipes are DELICIOUS too!!

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

You Are Loved Scripture Writing Journal and Memory Cards are not only charming but easy to use!  I love that the Scripture memory cards are small enough to stick in your purse so you can take them with you anywhere!  The journal is simple and easy to use.  This will make a lovely gift for a friend and it would also make a great addition to your homeschool Bible program!  SPECIAL 30% off discount code—BLOG30—for the months of April and May on the You Are Loved collection!!!

CHILDREN

This past weekend my daughters organized the rather large bookshelf in their room.  They went through every book (which took them a few hours) and one of the piles was labeled “most treasured books from childhood”.  The 20th Century Children’s Book Treasury was on the top of the pile.  Chocked full of charming stories for infants through adults.  (I actually think it might be for preschool-aged kids but I love the stories too.)  You and your kids will have so much fun reading this one together.  *A few of the stories in the book are not written from a Christian perspective.

FAMILY

When you are in the midst of raising a family you must take time to vision cast.  It is so easy to lose your way and get off track.  This book is utterly inspiring!  First published as Home-Making in 1882  by J.R. Miller and now renamed The Christian Family.  Are you tired of pressing on in parenting?  This book is for you.  You will have a renewed vision of what the family can be and how it is able to transform a culture.  This book is completely God-honoring and how many times can you say that about a “great” book?

HEALTH

I must confess to jumping up and down when I received The Natural Beauty Solution.  I have been wanting to review it and in the past have read many sub-par books on the subject of natural beauty.  The skin is the largest organ in the body and what we put on it is absorbed quite quickly into the body.  Tried and tested by our family which includes 5 girls.  Allergy-friendly options and not a bad recipe in the book!

SPIRITUAL

What do you think of when you hear the word Puritan?  I think of an unemotional religious group that wore black.  Pilgrims and plain.   I was completely WRONG!  The Valley of Vision is a book of prayers written by some of the most well-known Puritans.  The passion for God is truly inspiring and worth sharing with others.  I recommend starting your daily Bible devotions with this book…it will change how you talk about God!
