I know some of you may be wondering, why a person would want to make your homemade apple cider vinegar.  The easy answer is that it is both healthier and cheaper to make your own. That is a winning combination in my book.  Plus, it is a great activity to include your children in and teach them about absolutely fascinating fermentation!  How To Make Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar is a recipe and a tutorial all in one.

It turns out that apple cider vinegar is 5 to 6% acetic acid. Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains a substance called a mother, which consists of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria and can help kill harmful bacteria in your get. Basically, apple cider vinegar is very, very, good for you, especially for your digestion and immune system.

Ingredients

4 organic apples (cores and peels)

5 cups warm water

4 TBS organic raw sugar

Cheesecloth

Instructions

  1. Firstly, find a large jar and sterilize it in boiling water or the dishwasher.  This jar should be big enough to hold 6 to 8 cups of liquid and apples.
  2. Fill the jar with 4 cups of warm water, add sugar, and the peels and core from four apples.
  3. Stir it and cover it with a cheesecloth. Set the jar in a warm dark place for two weeks.  Around 70 degrees is best.  If you are fermenting in the colder months, Add a splash of premade apple cider vinegar to help prevent mold.
  4. Every time you cut and peel an apple, you can add it to the mixture!
  5. Remove the apples after two weeks if there is a vinegary smell and allow the mixture to ferment for at least two more weeks, longer is fine.
  6. When your vinegar is a bit cloudy and a mother has formed you can cover the jar with a solid lid and store it in your refrigerator.
