This could be by far the least popular article I have ever written. Sugar and weight loss top the list of unpleasant subjects. Together, doubly so. That said, it could be one of the most important things I have ever written about.

The connection between Sugar and Weight Loss enabled me to lose 25 lbs!

Let’s start with the facts.

Growing scientific evidence shows that eating sugar is linked to serious diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, and all chronic illness.  This information comes from SugarScience, University of California, based on a comprehensive review of more than 8,000 scientific studies on the health impacts of sugar. The strongest research falls into the following five areas.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

Liquid sugar, such as sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks, is the leading single source of sugar in the American diet. And there’s growing scientific evidence that it’s the most dangerous way to consume it.

Hidden in Plain Sight

Sugar is found in 74% of packaged foods sold in supermarkets, including many savory foods or items marketed as “healthy.”

The Toxic Truth

There is a growing scientific consensus that one of the most common types of sugar, fructose, is toxic to the liver, just like alcohol.

Too Much Can Make Us Sick

Heart disease. Diabetes. These chronic conditions are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Increasingly, scientists are focusing on a common set of underlying metabolic issues that raise people’s risk for chronic disease. And it turns out that eating too much sugar over the long-term is linked to many of these dysfunctions.

How Much Is Too Much?

Experts agree that some added sugar in the diet is usually fine. But the truth is, most Americans are consuming way too much, on average, nearly 66 pounds of added sugar per person, every year.

My Story

I’ve been off sugar for the past 4 years and off all sweeteners that can affect my glycemic index for a year. I do cheat on birthdays and I always pay the price but to me, it’s worth it.

The process of eliminating sugar from my diet was extremely difficult as sugar is addictive. I went through withdrawal, it was not pleasant for me or my family and took about two weeks.

Mind you by this point in my wellness journey I had already given up gluten, (I have Celiac Disease), and eliminated about 25 foods from my diet, switched to olive oil and also gave up dairy. Everyone kept saying that as an added benefit I would lose weight but I didn’t.

Things started to change when I gave up sugar. I started to think more clearly, less emotional, never had another hot flash and yes, I lost 25 pounds. I lost most of the 25 pounds when I gave up all sweeteners but stevia.

I’m sure this is not what you wanted to hear. The truth can be hard but in the end, giving up sugar could save your life by preventing illness and as an added benefit you could lose some weight along the way!

YOUR TURN…

Try a sugar detox and see how you feel after two weeks.
